For Māori entrepreneurs looking to turn their dreams into reality, Jade Kake’s experience with Northland’s The Pick program offers a powerful example of how the right support and knowledge can help pakihi Māori thrive.

In 2019, not long after launching her own architecture and urbanism business, Jade took part in The Pick, a 10-week program designed to equip business owners with practical skills, strategic insights, and strong networks. Reflecting on her journey, she credits the program with giving her the tools and confidence to navigate the complexities of running a successful pakihi.

"It really pushed me to think carefully - who are my customers? What do they need? How do they behave? How do I reach them?" Jade recalls. Before joining The Pick, she lacked a formal business plan, but the program helped her create one and gave her the confidence to hire her first employee.

More than just a learning experience, The Pick connected Jade with essential support networks in Tai Tokerau, opening doors to funding, procurement opportunities, and expert advice. These relationships proved invaluable during challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic and extreme weather events that affected many small businesses in the region.

A key takeaway for Jade was the importance of financial planning and management - an area she encourages aspiring pakihi owners to take seriously. She advises others to approach business with open eyes, be honest about skill gaps, and take advantage of opportunities like "The Pick" to upskill and grow their pakihi in a sustainable way.

"If you’ve taken a moment to reflect and know in your heart that business is the right path for you, then be honest about where you’re at," Jade says. "The Pick is an amazing way to either gain the skills you need or figure out if entrepreneurship is truly the right fit."

Her journey is a testament to the power of kaupapa-based business support and the strength of pakihi Māori when guided by knowledge, whānau support, and connection to kaupapa. As more Māori look to establish and grow their own businesses, Jade's experience highlights the vital role of initiatives like The Pick in nurturing resilience, innovation, and success in the Māori business community.
