Pātaka Kai: Growing kai sovereignty

$45.00

By growing and eating kai from the māra, we are more resilient – physically, emotionally and spiritually. This process teaches us to notice the small things – the seeds, the soil, the birds and the insects.

That’s the premise behind Pātaka Kai: Growing kai sovereignty – a new pukapuka created by a collaboration between Papawhakaritorito Trust founders Dr Jessica Hutchings and Dr Jo Smith, kaupapa Māori visual artist Johnson Witehira and kairangahau Yvonne Taura.

This pukapuka is an output from the Kai Atua: Food for Hope and Wellbeing research programme – a three-year Marsden Fund project funded by Te Apārangi.

A flaxroots investigation, the book melds the realities of Māori and Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa growers with Indigenous knowledge insights to reveal the diverse solutions we need for improving our food futures.

In the process, the researchers show the connection between our biodiversity crisis and climate meltdown; our broken food systems; our seeds owned by global corporations; the impact of agricultural colonisation and the benefits that a return to Indigenous values and practices could deliver.
